Encryption In The News Again PDF Print E-mail

In recent days there have been a few stories of laptops being stolen from both the HSE offices and from Bord Gáis, with sensitive customer information in both cases now at risk.

Encryption is such an easy thing to implement on any machine be it a laptop or a desktop, it is baffling to us here why these big companies and government departments are not doing it across the board. There seems to be an "it'll never happen to us" mentality about a lot of them.

So what exactly is encryption and how does it work?

There are two types of encryption, hardware based, which is not too common (yet), and software based, which is the most common form. Our preferred encryption software here at CTS Cork South completely encrypts your primary hard drive, and also any external drives or memory keys you use on that machine. It even has the capabilities to encrypt your emails should you wish to email any sensitive data.

Once your disk is encrypted, if your machine is stolen, the thief cannot access any of the data on that drive, even if they attach that drive to any other machine. This means that you can rest assured that both your own sensitive information, and that of your customers is safe from scammers and fraudsters.
